I saw George VI lying in state

-

Like most other people I have been greatly saddened by the death of our Queen Elizabeth.

It has been interesting to see all the people queuing to see the lying in state. As a child of nine years, I went to the lying in state of King George VI with a cousin.

I remember waiting for five hours and being so impressed by the vastness of the hall and the guards on duty. I know my mother made me wear thick brown tights/stockings which I hated but they probably kept me warm.

On a previous occasion, I saw King George VI leave Buckingham Palace in a car. This was my treat after one of my frequent visits to the dental hospital in Leicester Square.

I would have liked to go to Queen Elizabeth’s lying in state but sadly I do not feel able to get there this time and manage the long wait.

Did any other of your readers see the lying in state of King George VI? Jacqueline Newman
