Charity Day proves a huge success for causes

-

Bath Golf Club’s seniors held a charity event on Monday in aid of Dorothy House and the Children’s Hospice South West.

Dubbed the Platinum Golf tournament, it was originally planned to take place on September 19, but the announced date of the late Queen Elizabeth II’S funeral led to a week’s slippage and very hasty reorganising. The short notice unfortunately led to a third of the players withdrawing and only a handful becoming available.

Despite the date-change, and with Covid taking out a few players just before the day, 18 teams of four took to the field in a Stableford with three scores to count on each hole. Some sunny weather between bouts of rain provided for very enjoyable golf on the well-prepared course. Local companies provided some very fine prizes and sponsored all the holes on the course.

Heidi Roberts, a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospice, presented the prizes after a fine buffet lunch. The overall winning team, nicknamed the Mexicans and led by former senior captain Ian Hull, came in with an amazing 134 points - earning them a round of golf at the Royal Winchester Golf Club.

They were some six point ahead of the CCX starlets, led by Roger Williams, to win four tickets to a Bath Rugby match. Unsurprisingly, the hole-in-one prize donated by Lansdown Mazda was not won although one player got very close.

On course prizes of bottles of champagne for closest to the pin on the par 3 holes were well received, as were the many raffle prizes which included wonderful meals for two being donated by Homewood Park, The Bird and The Scallop Shell, complementing afternoon tea at The Royal Crescent Hotel and No15 Guest House, amongst other prizes.

Peter Norriss, the organiser of this year’s senior captain, said: “We have had amazingly generous support from many local companies for this tournament, almost certainly because they recognise the important work that the two local charities provide.

“Many individuals also value these charities, as was demonstrated by their support for some of the ancillary events, which included an Auction of Teams held during the week before the tournament raising £720 and entries to the raffle, sweepstakes and supplementary auction on the day.”

While the total proceeds are yet to be finalised, it looks as though the day will have raised over £5,500 which will be divided equally between the two charities.

Elsewhere, the ladies played a Stableford for the Burningham & Brown competition. The winner was Jane Franke with an excellent 40 points, winning on countback from Alison Gardener with Jenny Conway third on 39.

The juniors vied for the Underdown Cup and Cameron Stevenson won the event with a great nett 64, well ahead of runner-up Sam Harborne who scored 78.

The club ran a Stableford open to all players in fine autumnal conditions and scoring was very good. The winner of Division One was Matthew Jones with an excellent 43 points, ahead of Francois De Luca who led a group of players on 40 Haiqing Jiang was third.

Top of Division Two was Dennis Winman on 40, two in front of Anthony Jones with Anthony Booley third on 37. Division Three was won by Samual Armitt-fiori with 44 after beating Susan Scoble on countback, Mark Daniels was third on 42.
