Many roads will be closed for half marathon

-

This year’s Bath Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, marking its 40th anniversary.

It is one of the longest-established and most popular road races in the country and the largest sporting event in Bath, with 15,000 entrants and twice as many spectators.

Sponsorships typically raise over £2.25 million for charities and local groups every year.

The race begins in Queen Square between 10.20am and 11am, then follows two laps down Green Park Road to Churchill Bridge, out along the Lower Bristol Road to Twerton Fork and back along Newbridge Road and Upper Bristol Road before finishing in Royal Victoria Park.

On the first lap, runners will complete an additional leg from Churchill Bridge up and down Pulteney Road and Great Pulteney Street.

After a hiatus in 2021, this year’s event has been organised by Running High, in cooperation with Bath and North East Somerset Council. The route chosen is as flat as possible, dodging Bath’s many hills.

Several roads will need to be closed to allow the race to happen. Parking will be suspended in designated streets and ‘no loading’ restrictions imposed.

Closures and suspensions apply to all vehicles, including residents’ parking permit holders, and parking metered and disabled parking. The closures are:

8am-4pm: Footpath closures adjacent to the finish in Royal Victoria Park.

6am-6.30pm: Road closures and

parking suspensions in Middle Common, Royal Victoria Park.

9am-4pm road closures: A4 dual carriageway, A4 Newbridge Road, A36 Lower Bristol Road, Ambury, Broad Quay, Charles Street, Chapel Row, Charlotte Street, Churchill Bridge, Churchill Bridge Gyratory, Claverton Street eastbound, Corn Street, Darlington Street, Green Park Road, Lower Bristol Road, Marlborough Lane, Midland Bridge Road, Midland Road, Monmouth Place, Newbridge Road, Pinesway, Pulteney Road, Queen Square, Queen Square Place, Rossiter Road, Sydney Place, Upper Bristol Road, Windsor Bridge Road, A367 Wells Road - northeast-bound carriageway.

Footpath closures: 11-11.30am – Claverton Street junction with

Halfpenny Bridge; 11am-4pm – Newbridge Road between park and ride and Turnpike.

Parking suspensions: 6am-4pm – Cleveland Walk, Junction Road, Lansdownroad, Lower Oldfield Park, North Road, Oldfield Road, Old Newbridge Hill, Second Avenue, Upper Oldfield Park, Widcombe Parade, Walcot Street.

Parking will be suspended and traffic flow reversed on Widcombe Parade to allow temporary stops for local bus services. Through traffic will be directed south-west up Wells Road.

Temporary traffic arrangements will be in place to ensure access to the central Kingsmead area via a temporary loop through Dorchester Street and St James Parade.

During the road closure period, access into and out of Charlotte St, Avon St and Green Park Rd car parks will be closed 9am-4pm approximately. The normal daytime operation of the bus access gates on the High Street/northgate Street and Milsom Street will be suspended.

The civic amenity site on Midland Road will be closed.

Temporary footpath closures will be operating in the streets adjacent to the start in Queen Square, and signposted diversion routes will be in place. Exemptions will be given for residents needing to access their own properties within these streets.

The only access route into the city centre between 9am and 4pm will be the northern route via Walcot Street.
