Failure to install correct bus signage
The central stop for the U1 bus to Bath University has - for some time - been alongside Bath Abbey; but when the electronic signage failed recently, passengers were urged to “refer to timetable.”
The timetable displayed at the stop is for a completely different route, and on its reverse is a map which indicates that the U1 stops at Pulteney Weir.
Sure enough, at Pulteney Weir there is a timetable and bus stop clearly posted as “U1”, left over from years ago.
Assuming incorrectly that the bus stops had merely been switched around again, I foolishly tried and failed to catch the bus at Pulteney Weir.
After much correspondence with First Bus, I now know that nothing had changed but that - vitally - the signage on which passengers depend when the electronic boards fail is not that of the bus companies, but is in fact the responsibility of B&NES.
Why am I not surprised that, in a city that depends upon tourism and is trying to force out the private car, we are incapable of installing accurate bus stop signage?
