Universe designed, not an accident
Nicholas Hales obviously put a lot of research and thought in producing his letter (Bath Chronicle, October 27) “so really a sun died to give us life in abundance, which sounds in a superficial way, like the Christian claim that a son died that we might live”.
May I make 2 comments please? Firstly, as a committed Christian, I believe with all my being that God created the heavens and the earth.
However, the Biblical account of creation in the book of Genesis in the Bible is not a scientific treatise, it simply describes what God did, not how He did it. I am not a scientist but I believe that, if the tilt of the earth moved from 23.5 degrees, this planet would become increasingly uninhabitable.
Does this not indicate that our Universe was designed to be like this rather than being the result of some random occurrence?
Someone once said that believing that the Universe happened by accident is equivalent to believing that an explosion in a printing press could produce the complete works of William Shakespeare!
Secondly, not only did doctor Luke write his Gospel, he was also an historian of the highest degree.
Based on his accurate description of towns, cities and islands, as well as correctly naming various official titles, archaeologist William Mitchell Ramsay wrote that “Luke is a historian of the first rank; not merely are his statements of fact trustworthy, he should be placed along with the very greatest of historians.”
So, the Gospel he authored begins, “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.”
Luke then proceeds to write about the birth, teaching, example, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. So, if Luke is recognised as a secular historian of the highest degree, surely he must also be recognised as a spiritual historian of the highest degree.
The Christian claim that Jesus died that we might live is based on Jesus’ own words, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John’s Gospel chapter 11 verses 25 and 26).
Based on the evidence, each of us has a choice, to believe in Jesus or to reject Him.
