Austerity Round II looks likely

- Wera Hobhouse MP:

The Conservatives subjected our nation to yet more chaos. We are on our third Conservative Prime Minister in less than two months.

The UK is looking at a £35bn black hole in public finances that was totally avoidable.

Strikes were already being considered by most of the major unions; Austerity Round II looks likely which will further diminish our already broken public services.

Many constituents are suffering as a result of the Conservatives’ financial ineptitude.

In Parliament I spoke out against the reappointment of Suella Braverman to Home Secretary.

Ms Braverman admitted to breaking the Ministerial Code by sharing sensitive Home Office information using her unsecure personal email address.

Disregard for standards in public life is deeply embedded in the Conservative Government culture. We need a General Election.

The fact that one in five of our nation’s workforce - more than 10 million people - have been sexually assaulted in the workplace in the last year is shocking.

I am proud that my Private Members’ Bill which focusses on preventing sexual harassment in the workplace passed its second reading in Parliament. It will now proceed to the committee stage. My thanks to the Fawcett Society who, alongside the Government’s Equalities Office, have worked tirelessly to create a meaningful Bill that adds real safeguards for employees whilst at work.

Climate change delayers are as dangerous as climate change deniers.

At a cross-party Parliamentary meeting with John Kerry, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, we spoke about the need to stop normalising missing net zero targets.

Rishi Sunak will not attend COP27. His cabinet is promising nothing but delays to climate action at a critical point. We must not allow our climate targets to be missed due to this inept Conservative Government.

In Parliament I raised the concerns of Bath Spa University Student Union officers who told me how the cost of living crisis is hitting students hard.

I applaud our two universities for providing hardship funds for those in need.

Meanwhile the Government is failing in its responsibility to look after students and young people.

It is unacceptable that so many people in our society are being forgotten during this worsening crisis.

I met with staff at Oldfield Surgery

to see first-hand the excellent work they do and hear their concerns.

Doctors are worried that the quality of care over the winter, with the inevitable surge in demand, will dip.

They are under-resourced. The Government must make good on a 2015 Conservative promise to drastically increase the number of GPS.

Receptionists bear the brunt of public frustration at this Government-made crisis.

I urge all who use NHS facilities, please do not abuse the staff.

They are doing their utmost to help you.
