JOBS TO do THIS WEEK
Herbaceous perennials with fleshy roots can be propagated successfully from root cuttings during late autumn and winter. Verbascum, primula, Japanese anemones, acanthus, oriental poppies and phlox are all suitable species for this method.
This week is the start of tulip planting season so get some pots sorted for a beautiful spring display.
Prune fruit bushes – redcurrants, gooseberries and blackcurrants – during dormant season.
Mulch bare soil – this should keep it mostly weed-free until next spring and the gradual breakdown of the mulch will improve soil structure and fertility.
Mow lawns if still growing, but try not to walk on frosty grass as this causes damage.
Blackspot on rose leaves will overwinter, so pick up and dispose of any affected leaves.
Browse catalogues and books and decide what seeds you will order for next spring.
