More 20mph limits in bid to create safer, cleaner streets

-

New 20mph speed limits are to be introduced on 13 roads in Bath in an effort to create cleaner, safer streets.

Bath & North East Somerset Council says the plans will improve air quality, reduce the risks of accidents, and encourage more walking, wheeling and cycling.

The changes come after a consultation last November and are part of the Government’s Gear Change plan, which requires all levels of government to create better, safer streets. The consultation saw 53% of the 141 respondents support the implemen- tation of the 20mph limits, with a further 13% supporting in part.

The council is now in the process of introducing the 20mph speed limits at the following locations: London Road, The Paragon, Cleveland Place, Bathwick Street, Sydney Place, Darlington Street, Beckford Road, North Road, Bathwick Hill, Widcombe Hill, Copseland, Prior Park, Ralph Allen Drive.

Around six miles of highway in total are affected by the changes, with around 140 new signs due to be installed. It is the first time that 20mph speed limits have been introduced on busier roads outside of the city centre that mainly carry through traffic.

A start has been made on altering road signs and markings, with the changes due to be completed within the next two weeks, depending on the weather.

On Beckford Road, a separate cycle lane will also be added, as well as improved crossings and junctions. This is part of ongoing Active Travel improvement works, due to finish this month.

Cllr Manda Rigby, cabinet member for transport, said: “Keeping our highways as safe as possible for everyone is a priority for us and reducing vehicle speeds on these roads will help with that.
