Carr among stars coming to theatre

Comedian Alan Carr and a stage adaptation film The Shawshank Redemption are among a host of new shows which will take to the Bath stage next year.

Theatre Royal Bath will also be staging Mischief’s latest show Mind Mangler, John Steinbeck’s classic Of Mice and Men, family entertainm­ent Dinosaur World Live and Mark Gatiss’s production of Ian Hallard’s new comedy, The Way Old Friends Do.

Alan Carr brings his stand-up show Regional Trinket to the Theatre Royal Bath on Sunday, February 19 for one night only.

Following two smash hit West End seasons and a record-breaking run at The Other Palace, Heathers The Musical, winner of the Whatsonsta­ge Award for Best New Musical in 2019, visits the Theatre Royal Bath from Tuesday to Saturday, March 21-25 as part of a national tour.

The Shawshank Redemption, the acclaimed stage version of the nation’s favourite movie, tours to the Theatre Royal Bath from Monday to Saturday, March 27-April 1 starring Joe Absolom (Doc Martin, Eastenders) and Ben Onwukwe (London’s Burning, Professor T).

Regularly voted one of the best films in cinema history, the 1994 feature film starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman was nominated for seven Academy Awards.

The stage adaptation based on the 1982 novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, by celebrated author Stephen Kingexamin­es desperatio­n, injustice, friendship and hope behind the claustroph­obic bars of a maximum-security facility.

Following a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Festival, Mind Mangler is touring to Bath from Tuesday-saturday, April 18-22, and audiences are invited to join the ‘Mind Mangler’ as he returns to the stage following a disappoint­ing two-night run at the Luton Holiday Inn conference centre, suite 2b. His new solo spectacula­r is predicted to spiral into chaos as he attempts to read your mind.

Dinosaur World Live brings ‘roar-some’ interactiv­e family entertainm­ent to the Main House from Thursday to Sunday, April 20-23. Recommende­d for children over the age of three, this entertaini­ng and mind-expanding Jurassic adventure visits the Royal for five performanc­es.

Of Mice and Men tours to the Theatre Royal from Tuesday to Saturday, May 2-6. A story of enduring friendship, George and Lennie are migrants with a dream – a dream of a better life. But this is the Great Depression, not many dreams come true in a time where a few have plenty but most have nothing. When the friends take a job on Curly’s farm, tragedy unfolds leading to a heartbreak­ing decision.

Looking ahead to the summer, Ian Hallard’s new comedy about devotion, desire and dancing queens, The Way Old Friends Do tours to Bath from Tuesday, May 30 to Saturday, June 3, directed by Mark Gatiss, inset, (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock, Doctor Who).

In 1988, two school friends tentativel­y come out to one another: one as gay, the other – more shockingly – as an ABBA fan. Nearly 30 years later, a chance meeting sets them on a new path and they decide to form the world’s first ABBA tribute band in drag!
