Corsham joy with third round spot

-

Corsham Town have booked their place in the third round of the FA Vase, for only the second time in their history, after a 3-1 victory at Roman Glass St George.

Both sides won early corners as Callum Demkiv went close with a header. Corsham looked to be in the ascendancy and Chris Allen’s free-kick fizzed just wide. The goal finally arrived on 24 minutes with a superb curling effort from Dan Demkiv and it could have been two shortly afterwards after Brandon Murphy released Callum Demkiv but he scooped over.

Just as Glass were trying to create a couple of openings, Corsham doubled their advantage ten minutes before half-time when a speculative Nathan Davis effort managed to evade everyone in the box.

Callum Demkiv struck the post as Corsham looked for a third. Ryan Bath’s curling effort was well-saved before Allen hit both posts as it somehow remained 2-0 at the break.

Against the run of play, Glass got themselves back into the contest from the penalty spot. This spurred the home side on before Corsham eventually put the game to bed with ten minutes remaining as Davis’ long-throw caused chaos in the box and Callum Demkiv prodded home.

Corsham will go to Royal Wootton Bassett Town in the third round on December 3.

■ SOUTHERN LEAGUE Larkhall Athletic’s recent good form was brought to an end at home to Hamworthy United. A single goal from Sean Wright ten minutes before halftime proved enough for the league newcomers to win the game and leave Larkhall back in the bottom two.

■ WESTERN LEAGUE Premier Division bottom side Keynsham Town were narrowly beaten late on at Street. Kyle Anderson received a second yellow card on 77 minutes to see Keynsham play the remaining 13 minutes with ten men, and were ultimately punished for it in injury time. There was a lengthy delay as Jemar Thomas suffered a serious injury to his collarbone and all is hoped for a quick recovery.

On Tuesday, Keynsham were narrowly knocked out of the Somerset Premier Cup on penalties to Southern League Paulton Rovers.

Freddie Frazer and Henry Sade had efforts in the first half for the Ks, while goalkeeper Joel Manning was kept busy at the other end.

Paulton took the lead through Dave O’hare seven minutes into the second half, but Keynsham responded and equalised on 68 minutes when a clinical throughball by Kyle Anderson was finished off by Riley Gifford-hobbs.

Owen Brain saw his effort blocked, while Manning too also had to make a good save to force the game to penalties.

Both sides converted their first four spot kicks before Will Sage’s effort was saved by Paulton goalkeeper Aaron Sainsbury, leaving Mike Ilea to score his effort and put Keynsham out.

In Division One, Odd Down played out an extremely scrappy 1-1 draw with Oldland Abbotonians. Raf Waugh scored on 33 minutes for Down as the sides went into the break level, Cash Vinall scoring for Oldland as both sides enjoyed numerous chances. As the game got increasingly frustrating, Oldland were reduced to ten men when Liam Towler received a second yellow card but Down were unable to take advantage and the points were shared.

■ HELLENIC LEAGUE Bradford Town manager Lee Davidson and assistant manager Jamie Lyons have resigned from their positions following a 3-0 defeat at home to Fairford Town.

A club statement reads: “Today the club can confirm that Lee Davidson and Jamie Lyons have resigned from their positions as manager and assistant manager respectively. We would like to place on record our thanks to them for their service as players and management over the last four years, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

“We are immediately looking for an interim manager to be in place for our next match, and we will provide an update in due course.”

Before the defeat, Bradford held an impeccable minute’s silence while captain Harry Rutty laid a wreath to honour the soldiers who gave their lives. Fairford took the lead after eight minutes, before Malachi Benjamin whistled a shot just past the post as Bradford looked to respond.

Jack Pearson-brown was also narrowly off target as Bradford won numerous set pieces and Tyson Pollard volleyed over. The Bobcats were made to pay for their missed chances as Fairford made it 2-0 just before half-time. Despite more Bradford set pieces in the second period, Fairford added a third 12 minutes from time to seal the victory.

■ WILTSHIRE LEAGUE Pewsey Vale avenged their narrow 1-0 defeat against Odd Down Development last month. An early goal from new signing Christian Booth on his debut from Shrewton United set them on their way and a second from Booth plus a sixth of the season from Andy Rossiter saw them run out 3-1 winners.

In Division One, Larkhall Athletic Development brought their A game to Purton. Leading 7-0 at the break, they added five more in the second half to record a 12-0 win which sent them top of the table for the first time this season, with games in hand over all their rivals.

Finn Norris led the way for Larkhall scoring five times, while Angus Williamson hit a hat-trick, captain Charlie Saunders bagged a brace alongside further goals from Christian Simioni and Martin Smith.

Keynsham Town Reserves remain second bottom after losing 2-0 at Nailsea United. In Division One, Warren Edgell was sent off five minutes into the second half as Saltford lost 2-1 at home to Ashton & Backwell United Reserves, suffering their fourth defeat in eight games.

Peasedown Miners Welfare are a group of four teams on the same points in Division Two, five points off the top three, having lost 1-0 against visiting Imperial. They do have a game in hand over a couple of their closest rivals though.

Fry Club Reserves enjoyed a 5-0 thrashing of Burnham United Reserves in Division Three to move level with third-place Radstock Town Reserves who have played four less games. Tunley Athletic moved off the bottom on goal difference following a 2-2 draw at home to Clevedon United Reserves, courtesy of a double from Joshua Tyler.

SOMERSET Peasedown Albion Reserves are still awaiting their first point of the Division One campaign after going down 5-1 at leaders Haydon Sports. Jordan Wills scored Albion’s goal. Timsbury Athletic Reserves remain two points off Haydon, having played a game more, after goals from Kane Frith and Mark Hancock gave them a 2-0 win at Chew Magna Reserves.

Saltford Reserves were beaten 3-1 at Division Two leaders Shepton Mallet Reserves.

In the Somerset Junior Cup, Peasedown Albion took hosts Wagtail Athletic to penalties after the two sides drew 1-1, but Albion were beaten 4-2 in the shoot-out to exit the competition at the second round. Freshford United enjoyed a 4-1 win at Manor Athletic.

■ WOMEN’S FOOTBALL Keynsham

■ MID LEAGUE

Town are through to the second round of the Women’s FA Cup following a 5-0 win at Weymouth.

Keynsham face fellow FA Women’s National League Division One South West side Cardiff City in the second round on November 27. Cardiff knocked out Premier South Division side Bridgwater United with a convincing 4-0 win.

■ SUNDAY LEAGUE Whiteway pulled off an upset in the Cinch Cup at Chippenham & Bath First Division Beeches.

Both sides had yet to lose in the league, but it was the Division Three team who emerged victorious.

Beeches, without talisman Steve Ball, were under pressure from the start and it took just ten minutes for Whiteway to open the scoring when Ryan Lewis fired home.

Troubled by their fast-running opponents, Beeches were 2-0 down when Ashton Muir lobbed the goalkeeper on 15 minutes.

The home side finally began to get into the game and pulled one back on the half hour through Frankie Mcentegart. Both sides missed chances as it remained 2-1 at the break.

The start of the second half proved more competitive and, after 65 minutes, a fracas erupted after a heavy tackle which resulted in a red card for Mcentegart and Whiteway’s Bill Turner.

Whiteway though appeared to respond better and made it 3-1 three minutes later when Gary Jones out-paced the defence before slotting home.

Muir gained his second on 73 minutes to make it 4-1, before Beeches pulled a goal back two minutes later through Aaron Masson.

Whiteway had the final say though and sealed the game with twn minutes remaining as Jones again used his pace to grab his second of the game.

Aidan Maslen was named man of the match as Whiteway continue to enjoy their first season.
