Mcbride breaks new ground

-

Bath TAGB Taekwondo student, Callum Mcbride, has become the youngest student in the club’s 31-year history to achieve second degree Black Belt.

Mcbride, who trains at the Culverhay-based club, achieved his Black Belt at the age of 11, equalling the youngest age of any student reaching that grade. He then went on to achieve 1st, 2nd and 3rd star - the first student to reach this level. In-between gradings, Mcbride attended a coaching course and is now a fully qualified class assistant. He helps out at the club on a regular basis and is well respected by all students, especially juniors. Now he has set a new record achieving 2nd Dan by the age of 15.

The grading was held at Hellidon Lakes Hotel in Daventry where over 500 TAGB members were graded under the scrutiny of five Grand Masters, one of which was the man who introduced TKD to the south west in 1975, Grand Master Michael Dew.

Club instructor Master Rob Morris said: “Callum came to Bath TKD at five years of age. I was only excepting six-year-olds at the time but decided to let him have a go, the rest is history. We now start juniors at four years of age, which Callum can take credit for. Reaching 2nd degree Black Belt by the age of 15 is an outstanding achievement. His dedication, perseverance and devotion to the art is exemplary.

“He is very well loved and respected by all Bath TKD members, juniors and adults alike.”

Mcbride will now start training for his first red star grading next year.
