List celebrates three inspirational cyclists

-

Three women from Bath have been named in a list of inspirational sportswomen in 2022.

Cycling UK has released its annual 100 Women in Cycling list, celebrating women who empower others to get in the saddle. Philippa Battye, Saskia Heijltjes and Liz Matthews were all included to recognise their work to improve equality and diversity in cycling.

Ultra-racer and competitive bikepacker Philippa Battye, 37, loves cycling for its sense of freedom. Philippa competes in longdistance, unsupported bikepacking races such as the 1,900km Silk Road Mountain Race and the inaugural 2,000km GBDURO.

As a mum of two, Saskia Heijltjes, 40, was frustrated with the lack of safe infrastructure in her area. In 2021 she co-founded Kidical Mass Bath – a regular group ride where families take to the streets to show that people of all ages and abilities want to cycle.

As Bicycle Mayor for Bath, Saskia has raised the profile of cycling in Bath and beyond.

Liz Matthews, 57, took up cycling 10 years ago after neglecting her health – and her bike – for too long. Those first short rides led to cycling from Land’s End to London, becoming a British Cycling coach and finally starting her own business: Cyclebuddy.

She teaches adults and children to ride, inspiring them with her love of cycling.
