Health study names city as hotspot for active Covid cases

-

The South West has the highest daily new cases of Covid per million people, according to data released from ZOE Health Study.

The results, based on both public data and reports from millions of users of the ZOE Health Study app, state there were 148,488 daily cases of Covid in the UK as of November 23.

The health research project placed the South West at the top of the table, with figures of 1,984-2,824 daily new cases per million people.

Second comes the east of England, with 1,965-2,802 daily cases per million people, and Yorkshire and the Humber coming third with 1,830-2,936. In total, they estimate that 2,092,984 people are currently predicted to have symptomatic Covid in the UK, with Somerset having a total of 13,530 active cases. However, the city of Bath scored 15,078 in terms of numbers of active cases, which places them far higher than anywhere else in the county.

When we look at the number of cases per million people, Somerset as a whole county scored 24,513, which although high, is not concerningly so – Dorset has 49,224, for example – but Bath scored a whopping 79,318 active cases per million people, placing it among other urban centres like Cardiff, Hull, Leeds and Manchester.

Of course, numbers like this are far more common in urban centres like the above. Other areas with far lower urban density, such as rural mid-lincolnshire, managed to maintain low scores in this field.
