Market’s extra loos show there’s a need

-

In my earlier letter (November 17), I highlighted the woefully inadequate provision of public toilet facilities in Bath. This attracted a response from Francis Harvey (November 24), where he attempts to refute that claim despite there being very strong supporting evidence that these essential facilities are pathetically few and very far between.

The Victoria Art Gallery will be dismayed to learn that their very limited facilities are being recommended as a toilet destination!

If the public toilets are adequate, why does the council provide temporary facilities for the Christmas Market? Bath is an all-year-round visitor destination so what about the other 49 weeks?

As for Bath residents (the focus of the original correspondence), history paints a very depressing picture. Apart from Terrace Walk and Avon Street, highlighted in my earlier letter, over a dozen other public toilets in Bath have closed without replacement.

The suggested Google search is not an option widely available to the older generation most likely to be “caught short”.

As for traditional signage, a quick check revealed none in the city centre. There is a prominent sign in Victoria Park directing alighting coach passengers to the Charlotte Street Car Park facility but this is unfortunately ineffective judging by the queue of non-patrons at the Pavilion Cafe witnessed recently!
