were reduced to eight which increased the speed of the ship by five knots and the range by 1,841 miles at 13 knots.
The amidships turret and torpedo tubes were removed, and the remaining main battery guns were bored out by .06in. There were 12 x 4.7in guns, eight 3.9in AA guns, along with 12 Breda 1.5in light AA guns and 20 x 0.8in AA guns, all mounted in twin turrets made up the new secondary armament system. An armoured forward conning tower was installed with a fire-control director fitted with two large stereo-rangefinders on top. Armour was also increased on the deck to 5.3in and 6.5in over the ammunition magazines.
