Coming to America

BBC History Magazine - - History Now -

Twenty-four photographs by American photojournalist Lewis Hine have recently been auctioned in New York. Many of the images depict the lives of America’s poor and disadvantaged, as well as the plight of families who had emigrated to the country in search of a new life. This image from 1905, which depicts an Italian family in a baggage room on Ellis Island, was part of a project to document the experience of immigrants who had just endured an exhausting transatlantic passage.
