New nan­otech­nol­ogy is be­ing used on the Mary Rose as a way of pre­serv­ing the Tu­dor war­ship. Tiny magnetic par­ti­cles, a thou­sandth of the width of a hu­man hair, will cap­ture iron ions in the wood to stop pro­duc­tion of an acid that could de­stroy the ship’s tim­ber.


Sci­en­tists ex­am­in­ing ev­i­dence of brew­ing at the Ne­olithic site of Göbekli Tepe in Tur­key have claimed that our an­cient an­ces­tors en­joyed al­co­hol more than 10,000 years ago, and be­lieve so­cial drink­ing played a role in our evo­lu­tion into larger-brained pri­mates.
