Min­ing Art Gallery, Bishop Auck­land, County Durham 13 Oc­to­ber–24 March 2019 01388 743750 auck­land­pro­ject.org The of­ten mis­un­der­stood role of 19th-cen­tury women in the coal min­ing in­dus­try is the fo­cus of a new ex­hi­bi­tion in Bishop Auck­land. Art­work and pho­tog­ra­phy will be on show, ex­plor­ing the ex­pe­ri­ences of the so­called ‘pit brow lasses’, who worked on the sur­face of Bri­tish col­lieries, earning their wages by haul­ing tubs or pick­ing stone from coal.
