Thousands of images carved into rocky hilltops in the Konkan region of western India could point to the existence of a previously unknown civilisation, say archaeologists. The rock carvings, including the one shown here, are known as petroglyphs and could date to around 10,000 BC. The images feature a range of designs – from animals and birds to geometric shapes and human figures. Most of the carvings were hidden by centuries of soil and mud but have now been rediscovered thanks to the efforts of a group of explorers, who began a search after observing some visible examples in the area.
