Bristol council calls for inquiry into historical slavery
The legacy of slavery in Britain has never been far from the headlines in recent months – and now a city council is calling for a parliamentary inquiry to be set up to explore how reparations could be paid for the U-’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. Bristol City Council debated the issue at a meeting in March, with the city’s Labour mayor Marvin Rees (pictured) citing “the chance to have a national and international discussion” about the subject. Councillors will now write to MPs about the proposal after the motion passed by 35 votes.
