Born William Maks de May in Vienna to Yugoslav parents, Willy de Majo establishe­d his own design business in Belgrade in 1935. Moving to Britain in 1939, he joined the Royal Air Force in 1941 and after the war re-establishe­d a design practice in London, working in graphic, industrial and exhibition design, corporate identity, packaging and product developmen­t.

De Mayo acted as co-coordinati­ng designer for the Festival of Britain’s major Farm and Factory exhibition at Castlereag­h in Belfast.
