Period dress, modern manners

While set in the 19th century, Dickinson is anything but a historically accurate take on the life and times of Emily Dickinson (1830–86), a figure little heralded in her own lifetime and only posthumously recognised as one of America’s most important writers.

Instead, the television series is a comedy that portrays Dickinson (played by Hailee Steinfeld) as an aspiring poet and forthright feminist, someone with a millennial’s sensibility who can be relied upon to rail against the idiocy of those around her.

The third season, streaming now, is set against the backdrop of the American Civil War and shows Dickinson trying to bring peace to a family at loggerheads.
