Youtube glories

BBC Music Magazine - - LETTERS -

Your feature on streaming (December) was very welcome. I am glad you thought Youtube worth a dabble, but I have found it much better than that. Among the gems are video concerts of performances from Alfred Brendel, Martha Argerich, Claudio Abbado (at Lucerne), Les Arts Florissants and Simon Rattle. There are plenty of complete CDS there and if you are a Baroque fan there is a feast of relatively obscure composers to try out. It is true the sound quality can vary – the complete Haydn London symphonies from Eugen Jochum and the LPO, leaders in their time, are ruined by constant distortion in the louder passages – and listings are pretty haphazard, though balanced by the way they soon spot your taste and come up with interesting suggestions. It is certainly worth a try. Simon Buxton, South Gloucestershire
