There’s an abundance of great talent peppered throughout this month’s reviewed releases.
Yo-yo Ma reveals his final recording of Bach’s Cello Suites and pianist Dénes Várjon appears on not one but two five-star recordings, including this month’s Recording of the Month. And the rest? Daniel Barenboim, Steven Isserlis, Joyce Didonato… the list goes on.
And what of the composers? Discoveries for me this month include British composer Ruth Gipps (1921-99), who played the cor anglais in the premiere performance of her own symphony in 1945, and Behzad Abdi (b1973), the Tehran-born composer whose talents include composing for the modern opera stage. Then there’s Owain Park (b1993); might he be the youngest composer to take a top spot in these pages? Michael Beek Reviews Editor
