Ancient Greek poet

-

Sappho (c630 – c570 BC) was born on Lesbos and is famous for her lyric poetry that was intended to be sung and accompanied by a lyre. Ode to Aphrodite, the only poem that survives in its entirety, is Sappho’s best-known work and is considered the first literary piece about love and desire between women. It’s also the reason why the term ‘lesbian’ is used to indicate homosexual women, as well as people who come from Lesbos. Sappho’s birthplace Eresos, near Molyvos, is popular with LGBTQ+ tourists.
