The French label ★armonia Mundi joined in the fun, with nine discs celebrating the French composer’s genius. This one – focusing on Debussy’s later works and combining three chamber sonatas with his final pieces for solo piano – was arguably the pick of the bunch. Violist Antoine Tamestit, one of a remarkable team of A-list instrumentalists to appear on the disc – violinist Isabelle Faust, pianist Alexander Melnikov and cellist Jean-guihen Queyras are three of the others – is quick to put his finger on the recording’s appeal. ‘Debussy has a real modern complexity. ★e’s got one foot in the past and one in the future.’ And it’s the players’ success in bringing out this old-meets-new soundworld that was noted by our reviewer Julian ★aylock in the Christmas 2018 issue of BBC Music Magazine. ‘Until recently Great impressions: (left to right) Antoine Tamestit, Isabelle Faust and Javier Perianes Chamber Award ‘We used period instruments from exactly the time the works were written’
