Come on in! The opera’s lovely…

English National Opera has revealed plans to get rid of its wooden front doors in a bid to make itself more welcoming – some would-be opera-goers have complained that the current Coliseum front entrance makes them feel ‘excluded’. But what to go for instead? Large glass doors have been suggested, though a revolving door would also seem eminently sensible (see p16). We, however, would like to see an entrance that depicts famous doors from operas themselves. Such as Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. Or maybe Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle (above)? It’s surely the only way forward…
