CRITIC’S CHOICE

-

Kate Bolton-porciatti I recently heard pianist Jeremy Denk (above) play Binchois’s Triste plaisir and was struck by how romantic the 15th-century chanson sounded on the modern instrument. The experience took me back to the Ensemble Gilles Binchois’s hauntingly beautiful recording of this and other works by the Burgundian composer, in whose liquid melodies and creamy harmonies you can taste ‘the vines of France and milk of Burgundy’. It’s a wistful soundworld, where consonance and dissonance evoke ‘sad pleasure and sorrowful joy’ – ‘triste plaisir et douloureuse joye’.
