The British conductor has worked as a guest with orchestras from Sydney to Leipzig, but at the heart of his career is his work with Gabrieli, a choir and period-instrument orchestra. After many years of recording for Deutsche Grammophon, the conductor, who initially trained as a cellist, set up his own label in 2010. The launch album, featuring Berlioz’s Grande Messe des Morts, won a BBC Music Magazine Award for technical excellence. Since then, large-scale works like Britten’s War Requiem have been alternated with more intimate projects such as the A Rose Magnificat album, which was voted Choral winner in our 2019 Awards.
