Football fans are invited to check the score

Tunes from classical music have long been heard on football terraces – think Handel and Verdi, here – so flipping things the other way round seems a logical next step. Fans are being invited to audition for a new opera based on the beautiful game that will be shown in the Autumn on Sky Arts, who promise lucky applicants that they will have the chance to train their voice with a top singing coach. Though classic terrace ditties such as ‘Swindon Town is falling down’ may prove a little fruity for primetime TV, we presume that at least one or two familiar chants will make it into the score. As for the title, how about Un footballo in maschera?
