NEED TO KNOW

-

Connectivity: A turntable will always sound better hard-wired to an amplifier, but streaming quality is improving. Look for aptx, and ideally aptx HD Bluetooth for almost Cdquality playback, but remember both turntable and speakers (or headphones) need it.

Phono/preamp: A built-in preamp or phono stage means you can plug directly into your amplifier. The quality of these components varies, and separate preamps can improve the sound, so look for models that offer both options. This makes the turntable easily upgradable too.

Speed: All turntables will run at 33¹/³ and 45 rpm, but if you have a collection of classic recordings on shellac, find one with 78 rpm. Cartridges: Always choose a turntable with a replaceable cartridge. Swapping and upgrading is easy, and you don’t need to spend much to really hear the difference.
