BBC Wildlife Magazine - - Wild August -

One of our feistiest butterflies, the small copper flies rapidly and seldom settles for long, so it’s easily overlooked and infuriates photographers. It also lives in small, widely scattered colonies, meaning you rarely see more than a couple at a time. The year’s second generation is on the wing in August – look for these restless beauties along sunny hedgerows, woodland rides, banks and road verges, and on brownfield sites.

TOP TIP Look closer: males are smaller and have more pointed wings.
