What’s in a name?

In the orca piece (Agenda, March 2017), I see that they are referred to as ‘killer whales’. When I first studied cetaceans in the 1970s, I don’t recall hearing the term and I am mystified as to what is meant by it. The term is surely emotive and meaningles­s?
