AIt's when birds that live on high slopes – such the mountain quail in North America ( left) and the dipper in the UK – head to lower elevations for winter. These downhill travels are relatively short in terms of miles covered, counting among the shortest migratory journeys in the world, yet still result in a significan­tly different habitat.
