DECEPTION ISLAND

To enter the natural harbour of Deception Island, which is actually a caldera of an active volcano, HMS Protector had to pass through the infamous Neptune’s Bellows. This treacherou­sly narrow channel contains rocks just 2m below the surface of the water. The black volcanic ash and the pristine white of the snow on the crevasses in the landscape created a dramatic contrast.
