1 MUDDY MALE

In September 2017, I joined a photographic safari in Kenya. While visiting Tsavo East National Park to see big tuskers, we were disappointed to find that they had left the area to raid crops nearby. However, we were fortunate to come across this magnificent bull elephant on his way down to a waterhole, and photographed him spraying himself with muddy water. Jane Goss, East Sussex, UK

2 INFLIGHT MEAL

Wildlife photography is a hobby of mine and, whenever I get free time, I visit Yala National Park, Sri Lanka. I normally go there to try and see leopards, but will photograph any species I encounter. In August I spotted this little green bee-eater with my daughter and friend. Using the continuous shooting option on my camera I managed to capture the moment the bird caught and ate a dragonfly. I was extremely overwhelmed when I saw my picture. Chandana Abeygunasekara, Sri Lanka

3 FLYING FOR FISH

My friend and I visited Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska in August 2016 to photograph brown bears hunting. During the salmon migration, millions of fish travel up the park’s rivers to lay their eggs, and the carnivores gorge themselves to survive the harsh winter. One morning, we watched a female hunting for hours to feed her cubs. I took hundreds of images but this was my best shot. Vasselin Christophie, Luxembourg

4 PLAYING PEEKABOO

I visit Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, India, at least once a month to take photographs of birds. In October 2016, my wife and I spent the day there looking for owls. During a rest, I heard crows creating a lot of noise and watched them hovering near a hole in a tree. As I looked up, I saw the eyes of a spotted owlet peering back at me. It happened when I least expected it, making it a memorable moment. Alvis Lazarus, Bangalore, India

5 LUCKY ESCAPE

Working as a snake rescuer, I see a variety of species. In February 2017, my colleague and I were called to rescue this venomous common cat snake, nearly three kilometres from my home in Chandrapur. It wasn’t easy to catch, as it was trying to bite us. We released the reptile near a forest, and I managed to take a photograph on my mobile phone before it moved off. 6 MAKING A SPLASH

During a visit to Devon I spotted this European otter hunting. I lay on a small pier and waited patiently with my lens for the right moment as I had to figure out where the mustelid was going to be. I was so focused on catching it jumping into the water that I didn’t realise I had caught this shot of it reappearing with its prey. The mammal wasn’t fussed by my presence and gave me plenty of time to take pictures. Laura Whitty, Derbyshire, UK
