TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
If you’ve always dreamt of going on safari, look no further than the south of Tanzania
Tanzania’s Southern Safari Circuit features some of the country’s most remote and spectacular sights. With considerably fewer tourists than the northern parks, like Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Southern Circuit is ideal for seasoned safarigoers and confident travellers alike looking for an off-the-beaten-track experience.
The southern parks also offer a more varied selection of landscapes to explore, from savannah grasslands to palm-fringed wetlands and baobab forests. Activities include boating safaris as well as those by foot, plus fishing excursions – and Ruaha and Selous are two of the circuit’s top destinations.
RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Tanzania’s largest national park is characterised by diverse landscapes of exceptional beauty, and its centrepiece is the Great Ruaha River, which runs along the park’s south-eastern border through rugged gorges and open plains.
The wildlife viewing here is unrivalled thanks to the park’s two distinct vegetative zones. Big cats like lions roam the open land, while leopards lurk in the thicker areas of woodland. Large packs of wild dogs, herds of elephants, various antelope, zebras, giraffes and hyenas are among the animals found here, as well as an incredible 580 species of bird.
SELOUS GAME RESERVE
The Selous is Africa’s largest game reserve, and a Unesco World Heritage Site recognised as one of the continent’s biggest remaining wilderness areas. The unspoiled space features just a handful of safari camps and an abundance of wildlife, and the terrain ranges from miombo woodlands and swamps to open plains and lowland rainforest.
Covering an area larger than Switzerland, the Selous is home to plentiful numbers of wild dogs, lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo, as well as 400 different bird species.
SPOILT FOR CHOICE
Asilia Africa has recently opened two new camps in Southern Tanzania, bringing its total number of safari camps in the area to three. Roho ya Selous is the company’s first camp in the Selous and offers a stylish tent retreat in the undisturbed wilderness, exceptional game viewing, walking and boating safaris and fishing trips.
It’s other new addition, Jabali Ridge, joins the existing Kwihala Camp in the breathtaking Ruaha National Park. This elegant and sophisticated hideaway is tucked in amongst natural granite boulders and comes complete with an infinity pool and spa. Expert guides are on hand to accompany you on game and night drives and walking safaris.
