ON THE MOVE
March offers a better-than-usual chance of seeing our most enigmatic mustelid. Unfortunately, you’re most likely to encounter the banditmasked species as roadkill. This is because the polecat’s breeding season is now underway, when males wander in search of mates and frequently cross roads, often during peaks of morning and evening traffic. A lucky few among us might catch sight of a live animal in their headlights. Polecats continue to spread from strongholds in midWales and the English Borders into the rest of Wales and England, so are no longer rare – just very elusive.
