What is an extra-floral l nectary?

Nectaries are the glands within a flower that produce nectar to attract pollinatin­g insects, such as the orange-tip butterflfl­y ( above). Extra-flfloral nectaries, which are often situated away from the bloom, play more of a defensive role, luring insects to protect the plant – for instance against herbivores.
