The totoaba is in the same family as a Chinese fish species known as the bahaba, which was originally exploited for the supposed medicinal value of its swim bladder. However, this has been overfished and is considered Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Today, totoaba is regarded as an effective replacement for the bahaba.
