PYGMY MARMOSET

WHAT IS IT? The world’s smallest monkey looks set to become the world’s two smallest monkeys, following the discovery that what we think of as pygmy marmosets actually comprise at least two distinct species that went their separate ways two to three million years ago.

WHERE IS IT? The two species occupy northern and southern regions of the Amazon. It’s not yet clear which population will be renamed, due to confusion over exactly where the original specimen was collected.

?? ?? The pygmy marmoset was first described in the early 1880s.
