WHAT IS IT? The world’s small­est mon­key looks set to be­come the world’s two small­est mon­keys, fol­low­ing the dis­cov­ery that what we think of as pygmy mar­mosets ac­tu­ally com­prise at least two distinct species that went their sep­a­rate ways two to three mil­lion years ago.

WHERE IS IT? The two species oc­cupy north­ern and south­ern re­gions of the Ama­zon. It’s not yet clear which pop­u­la­tion will be re­named, due to con­fu­sion over ex­actly where the orig­i­nal spec­i­men was col­lected.

The pygmy marmoset was first de­scribed in the early 1880s.
