A FEAST FOR THE EYES
While visiting friends in California in February, I went in search of monarch butterflies. After failing to find any in Natural Bridges State Beach, Santa Cruz, we went to Lighthouse Field State Beach, which is an overwintering site for the insects. I was not at all prepared for the sight we witnessed. Hundreds of monarchs were clinging to the trees. I used a long lens so I could get a close-up shot without disturbing them. It was a magnificent spectacle. Ray Brown, Huddersfield, UK
