Limpets and their amaz­ing feet

Three Bri­tish species of limpet are dif­fi­cult to tell apart just from their shells. If you were to sneak up and care­fully dis­lodge one from a rock then its foot colour would tell you which species it is:

The com­mon limpet ( Patella vul­gata) ( pic­tured right) has a green­ish grey foot. The china limpet ( Patella ulyssipo­nen­sis) has an apri­cot­coloured foot.

The black-footed limpet ( Patella de­pressa) has a dark grey-black foot.
