What you can see if you visit Vanoise in the south-east of France Travel: Na­tional Parks

The first na­tional park in France was cre­ated in 1963 to pro­tect the de­clin­ing pop­u­la­tion of ibex af­ter hunt­ing be­came more wide­spread. Lo­cated in the Au­vergne-Rhône-Alpes re­gion it bor­ders Italy’s Gran Par­adiso Na­tional Park, and the French and Ital­ian parks twinned in 1972. Cov­er­ing 1,250km2 they con­sti­tute the largest pro­tected site in west­ern Europe.
