Nature’s Voice: Sherwood Forest
RSPB.CO.UK Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Forest is just a remnant of its glorious erstwhile expanse, but the large number of letters after its name (SSSI, SAC, NNR) point to the significance of its heathland, grassland and woodland habitats. This podcast discusses the history of the forest, the RSPB’s imminent takeover and the wildlife found in this landscape: the largest collection of ancient oak trees anywhere in western Europe (including the 1,100-year-old Major Oak), each of which is thought to host up to 1,000 species, and rare birds such as lesser-spotted woodpeckers and redstarts.
