DO UK WALLABIES COMPETE WITH NATIVE SPECIES?

-

Wallabies came to England as zoo animals and many were released during World War II, when private zoos had to close. A population famously became established in the Peak District, but has since disappeared. Wallabies continue to escape from zoos and are particularly abundant on the Isle of Man. Studies here suggest that these herbivores don’t compete with brown hares, even though they eat similar things. Wallabies could eat endangered plants, but we don’t know this for sure.
