Railway sightings

BBC Wildlife Magazine - - Our Wild World -

Richard Smyth’s report (Drought, October 2018) suggested that last summer was a bad time for foxes, but my sightings suggest the opposite.

I am a train driver, working mainly between Cleethorpes and Manchester Airport. In an average year, I will see about 130 foxes. However, I had recorded 126 by early October, with an explosion in numbers between June and July. I expect 2018 will prove to be a bumper year – it may have been extremely hot, but it certainly didn’t stop the foxes from keeping up appearances on my route! David Whitehead, Rotherham
