Defending direct action
I was surprised to read Mark Carwardine criticising the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (My way of thinking, August 2018), albeit praising their work to save the vaquita.
I met the ‘direct action’ conservationists in 1988, whilst working with a whale watching project in Hawaii. Since then, I have followed the work of a variety of projects, such as Greenpeace harrying the Spanish tuna fleet in the East Pacific and Paul Watson, of Sea Shepherd, shadowing and trying to prevent the slaughter of minke whales in the Antarctic for the Tokyo ‘fish market’.
I believe we need ‘Paul Watsons’ in this world to try to stop the slaughter of endangered wildlife. Peter Thomas, via email
