Spider surprise
The daddy-long-legs spider Pholcus phalangioides is not often found in Scotland as it prefers a southerly climate. To my surprise, there was a flourishing colony in a holiday cottage where I stayed in south-west Scotland in September. A few weeks later, visiting friends renting a holiday cottage in the Scottish Borders, I found another colony! Is it possible that visitors from the south of England are bringing their spiders with them? Jean Haskell, Edinburgh
