Wildflowers

Wengen, Switzerland

BBC Wildlife Magazine - - June -

Once the snow retreats from the Bernese Oberland area, the newly exposed alpine meadows become flushed with a carpet of flowers. Late June is the time to go for a high-altitude botanical treasure hunt: bellflowers, gentians, primroses, daisies, buttercups and saxifrages, plus a host of delightful alpine rarities waiting to be discovered. The traditional Swiss village of Wengen, at an altitude of 1,274m, is the perfect base from which to explore the rich diversity of mountain flora. Look out, too, for cute marmots, agile chamois and alpine choughs.
